2 πέλωρ
Grammatical information: n.,Meaning: `monster, monstrosity' (Hom., Hes., h. Ap., Nonn.).Derivatives: Adj. πέλωρ-ος (certain first Hes.), older and more usual - ιος (Il.) `monstrous, enormous'. Dimin. πελωρ-ίς (Xenocr. Med.), - άς (hell. a. late poetry) f. `kind of shell'.Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Old formation in - ωρ (to which perh. the PN πελάρης, Styra; Schwyzer 519, but not with old ablaut). On the diff. forms cf. Risch $ 6b and Egli Heteroklisie 89ff. (not in all repects convincing). Beside it τέλωρ πελώριον, μακρόν, μέγα and τελώριος μέγας, πελώριος H. (also grave inscript. Memphis Ia); πέλωρ etc. so Aeolic. Perh. with dissimilation for IE * kʷerōr and so belonging with τέρας `marvel, monster' (Osthoff Arch. f. Religionswiss. 8, 51 ff.); s.v. with further connections. -- To be rejected Bechtel Lex. s. v. (where important details): after Benfey, Solmsen a.o. to OHG (h)wal etc. `whale'. -- The supposed *kʷer-ōr does not easily explain τέρας (from * kʷerh₂-s?), so this word should better be left aside. So there is no etymology.Page in Frisk: 2,501-502Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πέλωρ
